The Australian Cyber Security Centre, ASD - Senior Software Developer (Python)

We're boosting Australia's cyber defences to ensure our essential networks are even more secure and reliable. The CESAR package ensures we can identify more cyber threats, disrupt more cybercriminals offshore, build more partnerships with industry and government and protect more Australians.

These additional measures will enhance cyber protections for critical infrastructure facilities, strengthen our partnerships with industry and boost the provision of cyber security advice to families, older Australians and small businesses.

As a part of the CESAR package, ASD is seeking a Senior Developer to provide software engineering input and provide key architectural and code input to the enhancement initiatives within the CESAR package. The position would require a fundamental understanding of internet services, networking, and modern software development best practices.

You will be leading a growing team delivering to internal and external users with a high degree of autonomy, support and guidance from CESAR Project Managers, applying your knowledge of modern software development practices. There is an expectation that successful candidates will work 5 days per week (estimated 40 hour week). On boarding is in Canberra.

The person will possess broad knowledge in:

  • Programming Languages
  • Cloud IaaS services,
  • Linux Containers,
  • Networking,
  • System architecture,
  • Linux and Cloud security best practice.

The person will possess skills in:

  • Using and implementing modern developer productivity workflows and tools,
  • Python development,
  • Shell scripting, Eg. bash,
  • Deploying code using Linux containers,
  • Developing a system using database or messaging products (such as PostgreSQL or RabbitMQ)

An ASD Psychological Assessment (PA) may be required as a condition of engagement and before a contract is signed. This requirement applies to all categories of employees.

Location of work Australian Capital Territory

Length of contract 12 months

Security clearance: Must have current NV1 clearance or higher

Essential criteria

  • Using and implementing modern developer productivity workflows and tools, engineering practices
  • Experience in leading a team - If this would be your first experience, explain how you should be considered ready for this responsibility and any additional support that would help you succeed.
  • Python development
  • Experience with cloud IaaS environments
  • Experience working with database and messaging products

Desirable criteria

  • Experience with Linux containers.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, NAT, DNS, HTTPS and SMTP.
  • Experience with enabling software developers in delivering capability.
  • High attention to detail with solid documentation skills and good communication skills with various stakeholders
  • Experience with CI/CD solutions.
  • Ability to manage concurrent tasks with competing priorities.
  • Ability to work with agility, and adapt to change, providing and receiving feedback
