The Role

The Structural Engineer will support structural engineering activities across a major Australian naval sustainment program. The role will develop, analyse and review structural designs for jigs, fixtures, support equipment and load-bearing assemblies, ensuring solutions meet applicable standards, safety requirements and engineering governance.

Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, the role will collaborate with mechanical, electrical, rigging, naval/structural and detailed design disciplines to deliver practical, compliant and technically robust engineering solutions.

Skills & Experience

Essential

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical, Structural or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum 5 years' experience in structural design and analysis.
• Demonstrated experience performing structural analysis, including static, dynamic, fatigue and buckling assessments.
• Experience designing mechanical structures, lifting & handling equipment, jigs, fixtures and equipment supports.
• Strong experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and associated engineering tools.
• Experience producing engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications and design documentation.
• Strong understanding of structural engineering standards, safety requirements and engineering governance.
• Eligibility to obtain and maintain an NV1 Defence Security Clearance and relevant program access requirements.

Desirable

• Experience within Defence, naval engineering, shipbuilding or submarine sustainment.
• Experience reviewing structural designs produced by internal teams or external engineering providers.
• Familiarity with naval engineering standards and regulatory frameworks.
• Experience working within controlled configuration and assurance environments.
• Professional Engineer status, with CPEng or eligibility to obtain CPEng.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop structural designs for jigs, fixtures, support system equipment, mechanical and lifting structures, equipment supports and load-bearing assemblies.
• Perform detailed structural analysis using analytical methods and FEA tools, including static, dynamic, fatigue and buckling assessments.
• Develop design calculations, sketches, specifications, technical reports and supporting engineering documentation.
• Review and validate structural designs produced by internal engineers and external subcontractors.
• Review design inputs including loads, operational conditions, environmental factors and material properties.
• Provide engineering guidance during fabrication and installation to ensure compliance with design intent and quality requirements.
• Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, rigging, naval/structural and detailed design disciplines to deliver integrated and clash-free solutions.
• Respond to technical queries from production, design teams, riggers and suppliers, providing timely engineering resolutions.
• Identify and manage technical risks and ensure designs comply with applicable standards, safety requirements and engineering governance.
• Support engineering reviews, assurance activities and technical investigations as required.

• Structural designs and engineering deliverables are completed on schedule and to the required technical and quality standards.
• Structural analyses and calculations are accurate, appropriately documented and meet applicable engineering requirements.
• Designs are compliant with relevant standards, safety requirements and engineering governance.
• Technical issues and design queries are resolved efficiently and effectively.
• Structural interfaces with other engineering disciplines are well coordinated and integrated.
• Engineering documentation remains accurate, traceable and appropriately controlled.
