FAQ

Working with a specialist recruiter gives you access to insight, opportunities and guidance that aren't always available when applying directly. Below are some of the questions we're asked most often.

How long will the recruitment process take?
  • The full recruitment cycle, particularly in Defence, can run anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on the role and organisation. We aim to move the process along as efficiently as possible and keep you informed as things progress.

Once I apply for a role, how long will it take to hear back?
  • You'll receive a confirmation email once your application has been received. If you don't receive this, please get in touch as something may have gone wrong. Generally, you'll hear from us within 3–5 business days, either by phone to discuss your experience or by email to advise you that we were unsuccessful.

Will I get feedback on my application?
  • Where possible, we'll provide feedback on why an application wasn't successful. In some cases, it may come down to non-negotiable requirements such as security clearance, citizenship, platform experience or specific technical skills.

  • When there is a high volume of applications, it isn't always possible to provide personalised feedback to everyone.

Do I need an Australian security clearance to apply?
  • Some roles require an active Australian Government security clearance, while others do not. Clearance requirements will always be clearly stated on the job advertisement.

Can you help me obtain a security clearance?
  • Yes. As a DISP member, Kinexus can sponsor eligible individuals for Australian Government security clearances up to NV2 where there is a genuine role requirement. Clearance sponsorship is subject to eligibility, role suitability and Australian Government assessment processes.

How long does it take to find someone for a role?
  • Every role is different and depends on factors such as the required skill set, location, clearance level, and market demand. While we maintain a community of specialised professionals, it can take anywhere from one day to several weeks to source someone we are confident in putting forward.

Do you recruit for permanent and contract roles?
  • Yes. We recruit for both permanent and contract positions. The engagement type will always be clearly stated on the job advertisement.

Do you recruit Australia-wide or only in Canberra?
  • While many Defence and national security roles are based in Canberra, we recruit nationally. Opportunities also arise in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and other locations depending on the program.

Should I apply directly for a role or contact a consultant?
  • Either option is fine. Applying for a specific role through our website helps ensure your resumé is ready immediately and aligned with that opportunity. You're also welcome to contact one of our consultants directly.

What happens to my resumé and information once I share it?
  • Once we receive your resumé, our operations team will create a profile outlining your skills, background and experience. This is shared internally with the appropriate consultant for review.

  • We respect your privacy. Please refer to our Privacy Policy for how your information is stored and protected.

  • If you would like your details removed from our database, contact us at privacyofficer@kinexus.com.au, and we'll take care of it promptly.

Do you share my resumé without my permission?
  • No. We will never submit your résumé or profile to a client without first discussing it with you and obtaining your consent.

Will I work exclusively with one consultant?
  • Generally, no. We have a team of consultants whose expertise varies by sector, location and engagement type. You may hear from more than one consultant to ensure you're aware of all relevant opportunities.

I'm not sure where to start. What's my best first step?
  • Start by getting clear on what you want next and what you bring to the table.

  • From there:

I'm ex-ADF. Can you help me transition into industry?
  • Yes. We regularly work with veterans transitioning from the ADF into defence industry and related roles. Our team understands how military experience translates into civilian environments and can help guide that transition.

I'm thinking about contracting. What should I know?
  • Contracting can offer flexibility and variety, but it's important to understand payment structures, obligations and expectations. We recommend starting with our contracting guide and speaking directly with one of our contractor consultants.

Why work with a Kinexus consultant instead of applying directly?
  • Working with a specialist recruiter gives you:

    • Access to roles that aren't always advertised

    • Insight into organisations, teams and culture

    • Guidance on positioning your experience effectively

    • Market context around demand, rates and timing

    • Support throughout the process, saving time and effort

    • A career partner and salary negotiator

Do you offer a resumé writing service?
  • Not currently. However, we provide guidance on best practices and recommend our free resumé guide as a starting point.

Are Kinexus and Kinetic Recruitment the same company?
  • Yes. We were originally known as Kinetic Recruitment and rebranded to Kinexus in 2016.

    • Registered name: Kinetic Defence Services Pty Ltd

    • Trading as: Kinexus People

    • Known as: Kinexus

  • We are not affiliated with Kinetic IT or QinetiQ.

How does Kinexus manage compliance risk in recruitment?
  • Kinexus works in highly regulated and security-cleared environments where compliance matters for everyone involved.

  • Our recruitment processes are designed to align with clearance requirements, employment obligations and client governance frameworks, helping protect both organisations and contractors throughout an engagement.

How do you balance speed and compliance in recruitment?
  • We take a measured approach.

  • In Defence and national security environments, moving too quickly can create risk for both contractors and hiring organisations. We balance delivery timelines with clearance, contract and compliance requirements so people start roles on the right footing.

How does your approach reduce risk for contractors and organisations?
  • By understanding the work, the environment and the constraints, we help avoid mis-hires, clearance issues and engagement problems.

  • This supports contractors to work confidently and compliantly, while helping organisations protect delivery schedules, reputations and long-term program outcomes.

What is an RFQ?
  • An RFQ (Request for Quotation) is a formal government procurement process used to source skilled professionals for Defence and national security work.

  • Instead of hiring directly, agencies and primes issue RFQs to approved suppliers, who submit candidates against defined technical, clearance and experience requirements. RFQs are competitive and a role is not confirmed until the process is evaluated and approved.

  • As part of an RFQ submission, candidates are often required to answer additional role-specific questions or provide more detail about their experience. This helps the client assess capability and suitability before interviews are considered.

  • RFQs are a common pathway into Defence and national security programs, particularly for contract roles. Timelines can vary, and outcomes are not guaranteed. We’ll always be clear about where an opportunity sits in the process and what that means for next steps.
